Oppositions accuse government of lying about tax hikes

The debate on government censorship takes place this Wednesday, December 4, 2024 in the National Assembly. According to the majority, if it is overturned, taxes will increase considerably for French citizens. However, opposition parties dispute this claim saying it is false information.

The debate around tax increases

The question of tax increases in the event of government censorship has sparked intense controversy. While Prime Minister Michel Barnier warns of an increase affecting 18 million taxpayers, the RN (National Rally) and LFI (La Insoumise) denounce what they consider to be an alarmist strategy.

According to Michel Barnier, if the motion of censure against his government was adopted, the 2025 finance bill (PLF) would be canceled. This would mean maintaining the 2024 tax thresholds, thereby freezing the indexation of tax brackets to inflation. As a result, 17.6 million tax households would see their taxes increase, and 380,000 households currently exempt would become taxable. This situation arises from a special law intended to ensure the continuity of the State, but oppositions dispute the seriousness of the long-term effects.

Oppositions contest government assertion

Oppositions strongly criticize this assertion. MP Jean-Philippe Tanguy accuses the government of lying to “scare the French”. For his part, the LFI president of the finance committee of the National Assembly, Éric Coquerel, emphasizes that the special law would only apply temporarily, then allowing the adoption of a new budget including tax indexation.

These declarations are based on the ability of a future government to rectify the situation from the start of 2025, thus avoiding the contested increases. However, this requires an agreement with parliament regarding a possible budget. In the current configuration of the National Assembly, the task promises to be difficult. Moreover, it is this fragmentation of the hemicycle which should, barring any surprises, lead to the fall of Michel Barnier's government.
