Fields were flooded on Tuesday following the bad weather. Fields where scout camps are currently being held. One of them had to be evacuated in Beauraing (Namur province).

Scout camps had to be evacuated yesterday/Tuesday due to bad weather. In Beauraing, tents were blown away. Scouts from La Louvière spent the night in a municipal hall.

“There was suddenly a lot of rain and a lot of wind. It blew really hard on everyone’s tents. All the tents were torn. Ours collapsed.”says Lison, head of the 5th scout unit in La Louvière. “We called the fire brigade to find out if we should evacuate. They came to the site, and then we called the municipality to find out if there was a place to evacuate. It was no longer possible to sleep in the camp. 38 guides were relocated last night to a room. It was only material damage. There was panic in the camp, because it was impressive at the time.”

The mayor said he had taken the problem head on. He immediately went to the scene to assess the damage: “I put on my boots and then I come to see first. I call the fire chief. Here, we can see clearly that we can’t leave them there“, explains Marc Lejeune, mayor of Beauraing.

Fortunately, he immediately found a room to accommodate the scouts for the night.A committee was kind enough to welcome the scouts directly, they gave us the keys and we came on foot” says Marc Lejeune.

The two units questioned intend to return to their camp: “They are especially the tents that are very wet, they will have to be left to dry for a few days, and the stilts may have to be reinforced“, explains Chloé, head of the 135th SGP unit in Malmedy.”It should be fine !” she assures.
