As Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral prepares to reopen its doors on December 8, after five years of a titanic reconstruction, King Mohammed VI is among the major donors who contributed to this international heritage effort. According to the list of patrons revealed, the Moroccan sovereign would have offered one million euros to participate in the restoration of this architectural and spiritual jewel, ravaged by the fire of April 15, 2019.
The reopening ceremony, which promises to be grandiose, is expected to bring together leading figures from around the world. Among them, the monarch is “expected” in Paris, according to information reported by Le Figaro. The King of Morocco would thus join other crowned heads, such as King Abdullah II of Jordan. However, some notable absentees, such as King Charles III or Felipe VI of Spain, could be represented.
The financial gesture of the Cherifian sovereign once again illustrates the active role of Morocco in international cultural and spiritual commitments. Already known for his commitment to the preservation of heritage, King Mohammed VI here strengthens the historical links between Morocco and France while inscribing his action in a tradition of royal patronage, which has lasted for decades.
The reconstruction of Notre-Dame, carried out identically to the destroyed parts, is one of the events which marked the beginning of the 2020s. The contribution of the King of Morocco, through this substantial donation, underlines the universal importance of this monument , beyond borders and cultures.
