DAKAR (Senegal) – Over the years, ASC Ville de Dakar has become one of the most successful clubs in Senegal and, as host of the Women’s Basketball League Africa (WBLA) 2024, is expected to bring home a fifth women’s title.
Since its inception, the ASC has been a women’s team and introduced a men’s team in 2014.
The four-time Women’s Nationale 1 champions qualified as tournament hosts. This is the fourth time that Senegal will be represented at the WBLA.
KEY PLAYERS
Fatou Diagne has a lot of experience. She won last year’s WBLA tournament with Egypt’s Alexandria Sporting Club, and was a silver medalist with Senegal at AfroBasket (2021 and 2023).
American Andreona Keys is a new recruit to the team. The former Purdue student has mainly played in Eastern Europe, and the Senegalese club will count on her for coaching duties.
Malian Elisabeth Dabou is the third key player for the club from the Senegalese capital. Coming from Mali’s youth ranks, Dabou won Afrobasket titles at the U16 and U18 levels. The 20-year-old also participated in two FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cups.
She also participated in the 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, proving that Dabou is no stranger to big events.
THE COACH
Moustapha Gaye won two Women’s AfroBasket titles with Senegal, in 2009 and 2015. He also led the national team to the Rio Olympics in 2016. With Gaye at the helm of the ASC and strong recruits, the team does not lack ambition.
