In an attempt to put pressure on Hamas, US President-elect Donald Trump on Monday made threats against this Palestinian resistance movement on his Truth Social network, calling on it to release the Israeli hostages quickly or face reprisals.

“If the hostages are not released before January 20 (…), the price to pay will be TERRIBLE in the Middle East and for those responsible who perpetrated these atrocities against humanity,” wrote the American president-elect on its platform. A date not chosen at random since it is the date when he will be officially inaugurated president of the United States.

Its publication comes only days after Hamas released a video of an Israeli-American hostage, Edan Alexander, asking Israelis and Americans to pressure the government for his release.

In November last year, an agreement was reached between Hamas and the Israeli authorities. 105 captives were thus released by Hamas in exchange for 240 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli prisons.

But while other negotiations are underway to free other hostages, Donald Trump wants to go further to make Hamas bend. “Everyone is talking about the hostages being held in such a violent, inhumane manner and against the will of the entire world in the Middle East. But these are just words and there is no action! », he points out.

Enough to suggest that he will want to use force, while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to whom Donald Trump is very close, is criticized by his population who accuse him of not doing enough to bring back the prisoners.

Around 250 hostages were captured during the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023. While it is difficult to know the exact number of people still in the hands of the Palestinian movement, around a hundred are still prisoners. Among them, 35 were declared dead by the Israeli army.
