Harry Potter actor Rupert Grint ordered to pay 1.8 million to the tax authorities

British actor Rupert Grint, who played the character Ron Weasley in the popular Harry Potter franchise, has lost his legal battle against the British tax authorities and has been ordered to pay 1.8 million euros ($2.67 million). Canadian dollars) in taxes, report several United Kingdom media.

In 2019, HMRC (His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs) ordered the actor to pay this sum after an investigation into income for which the actor had not paid sufficient tax.

During the 2011-2012 fiscal year, Rupert Grint received 4.5 million euros (6.66 million Canadian dollars) from a company which managed his affairs and of which he was the sole shareholder.

The amount was described as coming from residual income and bonuses related to the Harry Potter franchise films.

Rupert Grint’s lawyers argued before the court that these were capital gains for which the tax rate is 10%, while the British tax authorities maintained that it was rather a question of income for which he would have had to pay 52% tax.

A judge ruled in favor of HMRC, ruling that the money came from Mr Grint’s activities and should therefore be taxed as regular income.
