Hakan Fidan warns of the risks of a global arms race

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has expressed concerns about the rampant arms race, particularly in the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region. According to him, this could bring the world to the “verge of the abyss”, with a growing risk of a “threat of nuclear war”. This statement was made during the TRT 2024 Global Forum in Istanbul.

Hakan Fidan stressed that the global context is marked by two conventional wars with significant repercussions. He added that Türkiye is geographically “right at the center of these wars.” The minister affirmed that maintaining stability in the Middle East, the South Caucasus, the Eastern Mediterranean and the Black Sea is a primary objective for his country.

The minister deplored the inability of the United Nations to fulfill its mandate of maintaining international peace and security. According to Hakan Fidan, growing polarization fuels the quest for new alliances and weakens the international security architecture. He insisted that “no order can last if it is not based on justice”.

Finally, he highlighted the need to reform global structures in the political, economic and judicial fields. He also discussed the impact of technopolitics on the international balance, noting that artificial intelligence and cybersecurity systems worsen perceptions of threat.
