Dudelange: Liberty Steel officially bankrupt

Liberty Steel in Dudelange, it’s over. The bankruptcy of the Dudelange industrial site was officially declared this Friday morning, indicates the OGBL The essentialsconfirming information from RTL. “The company declared bankruptcy, which means that the local management realized that it could no longer pay salaries and invoices,” explains Stefano Araujo, of the OGBL. A curator has been appointed.

An event which could represent a relief for the approximately 150 employees remaining on the site without activity for months, who have not received their last salary and find themselves in “an untenable situation”. In the context of bankruptcy, “at least they will be entitled to the planned aid, to compensation,” breathes Stefano Araujo. This aid should cover unpaid salaries and that of the month of December, then a few additional months depending on seniority.

The money could quickly fall into the bank accounts of those affected. “The deadline is the big question mark. But we had already made contact with the minister, everything is in place so that it goes as quickly as possible,” continues the trade unionist. Early retirees, who must receive their company pension, which is reimbursed by the employment fund, will also be able to breathe a sigh of relief. “Even that, the company could no longer pay,” sighs Stefano Araujo.

The bankruptcy also opens the way to a possible takeover of the site. “We know that there are buyers, that there have been discussions, but things were not moving forward due to Liberty’s unattainable demands.” Now, “the curator will be able to discuss with the buyers”. A priority for the OGBL. “We aim for continuity of activity and maintenance of the site. This is what employees want, they want to work and finish their career peacefully.” Now that the bankruptcy has finally been declared, “the objective is to find a buyer as quickly as possible. We will fight for the survival of the site.”

The OGBL also indicates that it will bring together employees on Monday, “to talk to them and explain their rights”.
