The United Kingdom legalized assisted suicide on Friday. The measure was passed by the House of Commons by 330 votes to 275. The law was introduced by Labor parliamentarian Kim Leadbeater. It now goes to committee and will still have to be confirmed by both parliamentary chambers.

The last vote on this subject, which took place in 2015, resulted in a refusal by 330 votes to 118. Jersey adopted a law legalizing the practice in May, followed by the Isle of Man in July. The Scottish Parliament is also considering it. The law approved Friday during a parliamentary debate lasting more than five hours is inspired by the Oregon model, where assisted suicide has been legal since 1997. To have the right to use it, a person at the end of life must be able to demonstrate that she has “an incurable illness or medical condition which will inevitably progress”, that she has less than six months to live and that she has the capacity for discernment.
