As with other fields, artificial intelligence has entered the healthcare field, including in medical imaging. Doctors from various specialties now have the possibility of relying on artificial intelligence to assist them in their diagnoses.

AI-assisted medical imaging analysis guarantees faster diagnosis, explains to Médias24 Dr. Ahmed El Alamiformer president of the National Federation of Radiology and Medical Imaging (FNRIM) and the Moroccan Society of Radiology. More than half of the usual duration of the exam is in fact saved thanks to AI.

In an emergency, AI can render an MRI in 5 minutes

“The processing of images of the human body by artificial intelligence is based on compilations of images rendered over the years by radiologists around the world, a sort of large databaseall specialties combined. If the database has an international scope, there are regional specificities and health indicators specific to each country which are taken into account. For example, in Morocco, breast cancer is diagnosed in a younger age group than in ,” notes Dr Ahmed El Alami.

“New medical imaging devices that integrate AI first allow optimization of exam duration since they help to better position the patient and therefore save time. An MRI that we perform with an old device will take, for example, 45 minutes while an MRI rendered, normally, through a new device that integrates AI will only take 20 minutes. In the event of an emergency, artificial intelligence can even render an MRI in 5 minutes“, specifies the private radiologist.

For the former president of the FNRIM, AI in medical imaging plays the role of a assistant radiologist. She is far from replacing him. “The majority wonder if AI will replace the doctor tomorrow. Not really. These new technologies will simply support the radiologist as if he were assisted by another colleague. Diagnosis will be responsible always to specialists. AI only draws radiologists’ attention to avenues they might not have considered without its help.”

In Morocco, the AI offer in medical imaging is concentrated in large specialized health centers

The integration of AI in medical imaging in Morocco today benefits several specialtiesnamely oncology (breast and prostate cancers), orthopedics (fractures), neurology (Alzheimer’s and dementia) and hepatology (liver transplantation).

“Moroccan radiologists all join to these new technologies. However, the technologies are not available in all healthcare establishments. These are mainly large, highly specialized health centers which integrate them the most due to high demand”, underlines Dr Ahmed El Alami.

Radiologists obtain their supplies from foreign manufacturers such as Philipps. It is the responsibility of each specialist to continuously self-train by participating in international congresses and symposia to follow the latest trends, he specifies.

According to our source, medical imaging assisted by AI in Morocco faces two major challenges: maintenance and the high cost of technology. “It is necessary to constantly monitor and evaluate the devices. We usually establish an ongoing maintenance contract with our suppliers. The cost of the technologies is the other challenge. Prices differ depending on the options and features included, but they generally oscillate between 8 and 18 MDH“, concludes Dr Ahmed El Alami.
