Biodiversity vote: unusual complaint from a Zurich woman

When the result of a vote is not what we hoped for, we can complain, unless we didn’t go to vote. However, this is what a Zurich resident does, except that she did not vote, because she does not have the right to do so, given that she is only 11 years old. If the right to vote had been granted to children, there is no doubt that she would have rushed to the polls (or would have voted by post) to support the biodiversity initiative. The Swiss people did not want it and clearly rejected it by 63.04%.

This little girl from Zurich finds this deeply unfair and has therefore… filed a complaint requesting the invalidation of the result, because she did not have the right to vote even though she and her future are directly concerned. It seems unreal, but nevertheless the Government Council of the Canton of Zurich considered the complaint, as told 20Minuten. And positioned himself, obviously not in favor of the complainant: “Her objection that she is capable of making a judgment on environmental matters changes nothing. The claim to grant the right to vote to a minor cannot arise either from federal law or from international law.”

But the young Zurich resident is not giving up and has now taken the case to the Federal Court. To be continued.

The German-speaking site shows that this vote had unexpected consequences since a second complaint against the result was filed by… bees! In fact, by a citizen, who submitted this text to the very Council of the Government of the Canton of Zurich (which must not bother these days), saying that “wild bees should have the right to vote on environmental issues in order to to preserve their dignity as creatures and to protect them from extinction by man.”

The Council’s response is pretty much the same as for the young girl: “animals are not subjects of law and therefore cannot have any subjective rights. Wild bees do not have fundamental rights and are therefore immediately excluded from the protection of political rights.”

And if the bees had been able to vote, some would no doubt have cried out about pro-hive interference in the election.
