After founding the Alliance of Sahel States, Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger are now exploring the formation of a confederation. On July 6, the presidents of Burkina Faso and Mali will travel to Niamey to meet their Nigerien counterparts for the first summit of leaders of this new alliance, as reported Thursday by the official accounts of the National Committee for the Safeguarding of the Fatherland (CNSP), the ruling junta in Niger.

Although the precise agenda has not been disclosed, discussions are expected to focus on the fundamental texts governing the functioning of the future confederation, already in preparation.

Last May, during a meeting in Niamey, the foreign ministers of the three countries approved these texts, which now require the approval of the heads of state of this Sahelian bloc.

At the Crans Montana Forum, held from 26 to 29 June in Brussels, the Malian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdoulaye Diop, stressed that the three countries are committed to a dynamic of building regional integration oriented towards a true integration of peoples, rather than a simple integration of States or their leaders.

In September 2023, the presidents of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger signed the Liptako-Gourma Charter, establishing the Alliance of Sahel States. Three months later, these countries announced their withdrawal from ECOWAS, accusing the institution of being manipulated by foreign powers. The military regimes also left the G5 Sahel, established in 2014 with Mauritania and Chad.
