Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, called on the international community, particularly EU members, not to undermine the International Criminal Court (ICC). ), asserting that support for the Court is the only way to achieve global justice.
Borrell made statements to the press on Thursday before the second meeting of the “Global Coalition for the Implementation of the Two-State Solution” on Palestine, organized by the EU and Belgium.
He said he was particularly keen to hold this meeting on his last day in office as he prepares to hand over the reins to Kaja Kallas.
“I did not want to leave my post in Brussels without organizing this meeting. This is almost my last activity in Brussels. I am leaving tomorrow, but I ask everyone working for the two-state solution to continue to work hard, because without that, there will be no peace in the Middle East,” he said.
According to Borrell, instability in the Middle East will also affect Europe.
“I would like to appeal to all members of the international community and in particular to members of the EU. We cannot undermine the ICC. This is the only way to have global justice. It is the only “The ICC will not work if Europeans do not support it fully and without delay,” he insisted.
On November 21, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. However, part of the international community, including some EU countries, have said they will not support the court.
The “Global Coalition for the Implementation of the Two-State Solution” initiative was launched by the EU and Saudi Arabia on September 26 at the United Nations General Assembly. The first meeting was held in Riyadh on October 30-31.
