“Heretic”: Hugh Grant, creepy in an effective thriller that dismantles our beliefs

In the middle of an evangelization campaign, these two enthusiastic missionaries meet with Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant). Who said he was interested in teaching Book of Mormon. While it’s pouring rain, this eccentric man brings the two young women inside. They accept, specifying that the presence of his wife is required so that they can speak to him. “Yes, of course, she’s making a pie…”specifies the man. Before beginning a deep discussion with Sister Paxton and Sister Barnes on religion and faith. Which quickly takes a worrying turn.

Spiritual horror

Produced by A24, Heretic is the fifth feature film in tandem by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods (notably after 65 with Adam Driver last year). It is the first to be released in Belgium. The duo is best known as screenwriters for A Quiet Place de John Krasinski en 2018 et de The Boogeymanaccording to Stephen King in 2023.

“A Quiet Place”, a thrilling variant of the monster movie, without fanfare

Despite its somewhat catchy title – which suggests a very banal Hollywood horror film –, Heretic hides a rather twisted spiritual thriller. Confronting two young believing girls with a contradictor seeking to test their faith and their certainties by dissecting the process of belief, this little film proves to be devilishly intelligent…

“The Gentlemen”, a well-crafted thriller by Guy Ritchie (which returns to his roots)

Remarkably written, disseminating its clues in a meticulous manner, the scenario is constructed like a puzzle, like a dangerous game led by an increasingly worrying character, played by a Hugh Grant in great form. Seen in recent years at Guy Ritchie (notably in The Gentlemen), In Glass Onion: A tale of daggers drawn by Rian Johnson or Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Epic by Jerry Seinfeld, the British actor gives it his all, breaking his image of an ideal son-in-law (which he will find in Bridget Jones : Very lazy next year) to portray a formidable manipulative pervert.
