It’s a night out with friends. Friends, to be precise. That evening in October 2016 in Los Angeles, they all came at the invitation of singer Katy Perry. Present were actress Jessica Alba, now a billionaire businesswoman; actress Amber Heard, who a few months earlier filed for divorce from Johnny Depp, accusing him of domestic violence and sparking a legal battle that would last for years; and model Emily Ratajkowski. A dream villa, an endless table, a candlelit dinner, gold cutlery, bouquets of overly red peonies… The setting for a Hollywood party like any other. Except for one detail.

That evening, if the singer invited dozens of people to her home, it was to raise funds for the Californian Democratic candidate in the senatorial elections that will take place a month later: Kamala Harris. Present at the evening, the attorney general of the state speaks, talks about her fights for the fight against climate change, gun control, the increase in the minimum wage… The public is won over, happy about the polls that could bring the second African-American female senator to the upper house of the American Congress, twenty-four years after the historic election of Carol Moseley-Braun in the state of Illinois. Katy Perry is all smiles.

This summer, on August 23, the day after the official inauguration of the Democratic candidate, Katy Perry, who has supported the party since the election of Barack Obama, posted to her two hundred and five million followers on Instagram an image dating from this reception in the fall of 2016: a photo in which we see her with Kamala Harris. To accompany it, a link to Woman’s World, feminist anthem unveiled the previous month and first single from 143, his new album, which will be released on September 20.

“A real pop record that gets you moving”

One hundred and forty-three, like the one hundred and forty-three million records sold during a career that made her one of the most famous singers in world pop. A career marked by superlatives and which saw her, the supreme consecration in the world of American entertainment, provide the halftime show of the Super Bowl in 2015. The singer chained the hits with her cheerful pop: I Kissed a Girl, Hot n Cold, Firework, Teenage Dream, California Gurls, Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)…

Preceded by three singles, the last of which (I’m His, He’s Mine) in collaboration with rapper Doechii, This seventh album marks her return after four years – an eternity in the wringer that is the music industry. A major challenge for an artist who, however recognized she may be, is inseparable from the music of the 2010s. “I wanted an album that made you want to dance, a real pop record that made you move,” she smiled.
