Israel criticizes G20 draft declaration on Gaza conflict

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar on Sunday expressed sharp criticism of a draft final declaration from the summit of the Group of 20 major world economies. He called the document “biased and unfair” regarding Israel’s deadly war against the Gaza Strip.

On his X account, Sa’ar stressed the need for this statement to recognize what he sees as Israel’s right to defend itself. He also demanded condemnation of groups like Hamas and Hezbollah.

This position by Sa’ar comes after an Israeli offensive on Gaza triggered by a Hamas attack on October 7. This offensive resulted in the deaths of nearly 43,800 people, mainly women and children, and injured more than 103,600 others.

The conflict has also spread to Lebanon where Israeli strikes have killed nearly 3,500 Lebanese and injured more than 14,600 others, after an escalation in cross-border tension with Hezbollah.

Gideon Sa’ar said he had discussed with his G20 counterparts to include in the summit declaration a demand for the release of Israeli prisoners in Gaza and a condemnation of Hamas and Hezbollah.

He warned world leaders that failing to address Israeli concerns could threaten peace and security in the region. The G20 summit is to be held in Rio de Janeiro in the presence of the leaders of the world’s largest economies.

Despite international warnings of a potential regional war in the Middle East, Israel intensified its operations by launching a ground attack on southern Lebanon in early October, underscoring the urgency of a peaceful resolution.
