Malware attacks computers running Windows. It is called Phemedrone Stealer and exploits a vulnerability associated with Windows Defender Smartscreen. This flaw is linked to the lack of verification of internet shortcuts (.url). Hackers take advantage of this to generate .url files which will allow the installation of this tool. This malware mainly targets web browsers but also cryptocurrency wallet data. On the Chrome browser, it can collect a lot of information: passwords, cookies, information saved in password managers like Microsoft Authenticator or Google Authenticator. It can also infect our messaging applications such as Teams or Telegram, with the aim of extracting information, particularly that related to authentication.
