Historian of science, technology and the environment, Jean-Baptiste Fressoz published this year a shocking book*, in which he attacks a notion that has become almost sacrosanct: the energy transition. The transition from one energy to another, from wood to coal to oil, has never happened in a linear manner, as the history books tell it, he maintains. The historian warns against the prospect (the illusion, he says) of betting everything on a carbon-free economy. Jean-Baptiste Fressoz will give a conference in Geneva on November 26 as part of Climate Week.
