On the sidelines of COP29 in Baku, Morocco and the International Energy Agency (IEA) signed, on Friday, a 2024-2026 action program aimed at intensifying their collaboration in the energy transition. This partnership, formalized by Minister Leila Benali and Executive Director Fatih Birol, covers key areas such as renewable energies, hydrogen, the regulation of energy markets and the integration of carbon markets.
The program supports Morocco’s national energy strategy, with a focus on energy data management, climate resilience and the development of clean technologies. Fatih Birol praised Morocco’s pioneering role in North Africa, calling the Kingdom an “inspiration” for the region and beyond.
An associate member of the IEA since 2016, Morocco is increasing initiatives to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and promote a sustainable energy mix. This renewed cooperation is in line with the objectives of COP29, where climate financing for vulnerable countries is at the heart of discussions.
With this partnership, Morocco confirms its position as a regional leader in the fight against climate change and the transition to a low-carbon economy.
