Popular support for the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) and the Legault government continues to decline, to the point where it has now reached its lowest level in eight years, according to a poll.

The Léger investigationThe Journal-TVA, published Wednesday, reveals that the CAQ now has 21% of voting intentions, the same figure that the party obtained two years before coming to power, in the spring of 2016.

In addition, 32% of respondents say they are satisfied with the government, a drop of six points since the beginning of October.

Meanwhile, the Parti Québécois (PQ) took advantage of this decline and obtained 35% of voting intentions according to this survey. This is the party’s best score since the election of Pauline Marois as Prime Minister in 2012.

A small downside for the PQ, on the other hand: only 37% of people surveyed say they support sovereignty, and a quarter of PQ voters say they are against the independence of Quebec.

The other three parties are standing still. The Liberal Party of Quebec (PLQ) stagnates in third place with 17% of support. Québec solidaire and the Conservative Party of Quebec each lost one point, to 13% and 11% respectively.

PLQ: Coderre unpopular

Speaking of the PLQ, more than half of survey respondents (55%) say they have a bad opinion of Denis Coderre, who aspires to the leadership of the party. The former mayor of Montreal is just as unpopular with Liberal voters, who have an unfavorable opinion of him at 52%.

In return, his rival Pablo Rodriguez obtains the favor of 37% of the people surveyed, while 18% say they have a negative opinion of the former federal minister. However, 46% of respondents affirm that Mr. Rodriguez remains an unknown candidate among Quebecers.

Nevertheless, 26% of respondents maintain that they would vote for a PLQ led by Mr. Rodriguez, compared to 20% if Mr. Coderre were leader.

The survey was carried out among 1,010 Quebecers aged 18 and over, from November 8 to 11. Since this is an online survey, it is impossible to calculate a margin of error.
