Residents of Brienz must leave the village by Sunday

The village of Brienz is threatened by an imminent landslide. And he must be evacuated again. The warning services of the Albula region, in collaboration with geologists and experts, have in fact analyzed the danger. And they recommended the preventive evacuation of the town by this weekend.

This is what the municipality announced on Tuesday. “We must assume that it will be impossible to enter the village for several months,” the press release continues.

The executive and the management staff of the municipality have set the evacuation deadline for Sunday, 1 p.m. By then, all people and animals must have left the village. The people concerned will be helped in their search for accommodation if they cannot find it on their own, writes the municipality.

For security reasons, it is now forbidden to enter the village. Access roads to Brienz/Brinzauls are closed. Only residents and owners of second homes who must evacuate their homes are authorized.

Since mid-September, around 1.2 million m3 of stones and rocks have been moving above Brienz, at a rate of 20 to 35 centimeters per day. And there is a risk that a section of the mountain will break away and then slide towards the village in the form of a landslide. “Such a rock avalanche could reach a speed of 80 km/h or more. It could partially or totally destroy the village,” specifies the municipality.
