Marieke Kruit would be the very first woman to preside over the destiny of the city of Bern. Anachronistic in a city which made headlines in the international press 4 years ago, when women won no less than 70% of legislative seats. But town hall has always remained a matter for men, preferably socialists. A long habit thrown out the window in 2017, when Alec von Graffenried of the Free List Greens (VLL) – Bern has three green parties, not counting the Liberal Greens – won over the favorite Ursula Wyss (PS). The former national councilor thus succeeds the socialist Alexander Tschäppät, an emblematic figure of the capital, who died in 2018.
This time, outgoing mayor Alec von Graffenried will battle it out with his legislative colleague Marieke Kruit (PS), but also with two contenders from the right, who must first wrest a seat from the municipal executive. These are the green-liberal national councilor Melanie Mettler, and the young UDC Janosch Weyermann.
