Deadly floods in Spain: “We must accept that mistakes may have been made”, the Prime Minister promises explanations

The time of “political debate” will come after that of reconstruction, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez assured Monday, two days after a massive demonstration in Valencia denouncing the poor management by the authorities of the deadly floods of October 29.

“The government is doing what it must do. And what we must do is rebuild after this tragedy and revive economic and social activity”declared the head of the socialist government during a press conference.

“Later, the political debate will focus on things to improve in the face of this climate emergency and, without doubt, in the face of taking political responsibilities which, of course, will have to be justified”he continued.

While tens of thousands of people demanded his “resignation” Saturday during the demonstration in Valencia, the president of the region Carlos Mazón recognized for his part Monday “errors” in the chaotic management of the floods which left at least 222 dead, according to the latest report released by the government.

“I think we have to accept that mistakes could have been made without a doubt, we have to do it with all humility”he said during a press briefing.

Mr. Mazón is due to speak to the Valencia regional parliament on Thursday to discuss the management of the disaster. “We will start talking about politics, explanations (…) from Thursday”he assured.

In Valencia, the demonstration brought together 130,000 people on Saturday.

The president of the region Carlos Mazón (Popular Party, right) and the head of the socialist government Pedro Sánchez are accused by the victims of having underestimated the risks and poorly coordinated emergency relief.
