  • Used textile collection companies in Switzerland are no longer able to keep up and be profitable, as the quantity of discarded fast-fashion clothing is increasing rapidly.

  • Seven players in the clothing market have decided to launch a recycling tax on purchase, paid by consumers, to improve the system for handling used textiles.

  • The amount of the tax is still unknown. The new system should be defined in the coming weeks and implemented in 2026.

In 2023, more than seven kilos of textile waste were produced per capita. In total, according to the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN), some 60,400 tonnes of this waste were collected in collection bins by companies which make their profit from this commercial activity, such as Texaid and Tell -Tex, main market players. However, the latter is less and less profitable in the face of the tidal wave of used clothing produced by “fast fashion” and consumed in large quantities by the Swiss, reports the Sunday newspaper in an article published this Sunday.

Textile collectors have been warning for a long time: if nothing changes, recycling will no longer be able to be financed, according to the German-speaking newspaper which announces that seven Swiss clothing companies, Calida, Mammut, Odlo, PKZ, Workfashion, Radys and Switcher, are in the process of developing a financing solution through an advance recycling tax.
