Young people in Switzerland feel less stressed by social media than people think. This is one of the conclusions of Pro Juventute’s first youth study. School, training and exams are the biggest stressor.
The study was carried out in collaboration with the child and adolescent psychiatry department of the University Psychiatric Clinic in Zurich, explains Pro Juventute. The foundation published its study in the Sunday media. Adolescents and young adults aged 14 to 25 were interviewed.
As part of the representative survey, 88% of adolescents and young adults said they felt psychologically well. And even 94% say they are in good physical health. “Despite these high values, 30% of young people often feel tired and exhausted,” writes Pro Juventute.

School and exams
School, training and exams are the biggest stressor. This is followed by pressure to perform, money worries, high demands and worry about the professional future. A surprise is that only 15% consider social media stress a major problem.
The survey also reveals a well-known pattern: twice as many girls and young women require outside help as boys and young men of the same age. Thus, 12% of participants were in psychotherapeutic treatment at the time of the survey. A third sought professional help such as psychotherapy.
