With the arrival of 5G, South Africa aims to transform its cities into intelligent environments, capable of meeting modern needs in terms of mobility, resource management, and security. By integrating 5G with advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), this project opens new perspectives for connected infrastructure.
On November 7, 2024, ZTE Corporation, a global information and communications technology (ICT) player, announced a memorandum of understanding with South African telecom operator MTN, local technology company Aizatron, and the district of Weskus. This collaboration aims to create smart cities in South Africa, with an initial implementation in Malmesbury, Weskus District.
In a press release, ZTE clarified that “the four parties are committed to building a highly efficient and sustainable smart city ecosystem. This is the first AI-based proof of concept in South Africa, aimed at testing intelligent technologies supporting asset recognition and inventory management. » This pilot project, integrating 5G connectivity and AI capabilities, will develop infrastructure to optimize transportation, manage urban resources, and improve the quality of life of residents.
5G is essential for the digital transformation of urban spaces, providing high bandwidth and low latency, ideal for supporting massive data generated by sensors and connected technologies. Thanks to 5G, cities can implement solutions such as real-time traffic management, enhanced public safety with intelligent video surveillance, and automation of urban services. These innovations also allow authorities to collect and analyze data in real time, facilitating proactive governance.
For MTN, this smart city project marks another step in its diversification strategy beyond traditional telecommunications services. By investing in areas such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and connected infrastructure, MTN is strengthening its position as a key player in South Africa’s digital transformation. This strategic positioning increases its competitiveness in a sector where innovation is crucial to differentiate itself. The company has also expanded its 5G coverage in South Africa to 44% in September 2024, compared to 35% at the start of the year, underlining its connectivity ambitions.
