LThe PS, the PTB and Ecolo agreed this Thursday evening to govern together in Mons. This is the first time that the PTB has entered a majority in the south of the country.
Georges-Louis Bouchez, president of the MR, leader of Mons en Mieux, reacted on RTBF to this announcement. He evokes a “coalition of shame” between parties which “lost the elections”. And ironically: “It’s the perfect cocktail for a city which was already in great financial and budgetary difficulties. » “It is a disastrous signal and the PS has just crossed a red line, it will not remain without consequences,” he concluded.
Nicolas Martin defends himself
Guest on La Première, Nicolas Martin, outgoing mayor of Mons, who will return to this position, explained about this majority agreement. He explained that he wanted to “keep (his) electoral commitments not to govern with Mons en Mieux, and because the prediction coalition with Les Engagés and Ecolo was not possible”, the party of Maxime Prévot having chosen to ‘opposition.
“The PTB, which was not my ideal partner before the elections, showed itself to be moderate, constructive,” he continued, adding that with Georges-Louis Bouchez, president of the MR and head of file of Mons en Mieux, “significant differences of opinion on the merits. Furthermore, we are faced with extremely aggressive people, who use invective.”
Asked about the need to ally with the PTB (mathematically speaking, Ecolo’s support was enough to form a majority), the mayor explained that it was necessary, in order to “be able to calmly manage a city the size of Mons, a comfortable majority.” He also underlined his ambition to represent “as many citizens as possible” across different political sensitivities.
