Despite her defeat, the defeated Democratic candidate Kamala Harris will have “left her mark in the hardest of glass ceilings”, believes the mayor of Montreal, Valérie Plante, who is worried about the future of women’s rights after the election of President-elect Donald Trump.

“The outcome of the US election is not what many of us would have hoped for. I congratulate Kamala Harris on her campaign. History will remember her as one of the women who left her mark in the hardest of glass ceilings,” argued the municipal official in a statement transmitted on the social network X on Wednesday.

She adds that “the coming years promise to be filled with challenges”, but above all that “women’s rights are never guaranteed”.

“We must remain vigilant throughout our lives. Let us continue to defend our hard-won rights, denounce injustices and show solidarity with each other,” persisted the mayor of the metropolis.

This has so far been careful not to mention President-elect Donald Trump, who had amassed 292 electors and 51% of the popular vote at the time of writing these lines. Mme Plante neither mentions nor congratulates him in his publication.

Elsewhere in Quebec, the Fédération québécoise des municipalities (FMQ) for its part indicated on Tuesday that “the election of Donald Trump raises questions for several regions of Quebec close to the United States, which benefit from cross-border trade in various sectors, notably trade, tourism and manufacturing.

The organization also reiterated “the importance of maintaining a constructive dialogue [avec l’administration Trump] to preserve the prosperity of our communities.”

In addition to the presidency itself, Mr. Trump’s Republicans will also take control of the Senate, where they will have at least 51 elected officials, compared to 42 for the Democrats. They are also ahead in the House of Representatives.

Four of the seven key states have already been assigned to Donald Trump: North Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
