The Walloon Minister of Mobility, François Desquesnes, wants to rebalance TEC prices between the age groups of users, he announced Tuesday on Bel-RTL.

Certain categories of users benefit from free or almost free use of public transport in Wallonia, notably 18-24 year olds who only pay 12 euros per year while 12-17 year olds or people over 25 year olds, like Kelly, pay a lot more.

The minister commissioned a study on TEC prices from his services. “Does lowering the fare allow more people to take the bus? I have just received the results which show that there is no significant impact of this free or quasi-free policy,” he explained.

“Today, it is pedestrians and cyclists who have decided to take the bus more”

According to him, it is “very unusual” that “age groups pay full price” and others “not much”. “It’s a real difficulty in making prices readable,” he added.

Thierry, 64, is retiring after working for 32 years at the TEC in the province of Namur: “If we take attacks with humor, everything passes”

“We will have to rebalance fares between the different age groups and ensure that the money given to reduce fares has a positive impact, so that more people take the bus. Today, it is pedestrians and cyclists who have decided to take the bus more,” said Mr. Desquesnes.
