Bad news for the job market. The unemployment rate increased in the 3rd quarter of 2024 to 13.6% compared to 13.5% a year earlier, according to the High Commission for Planning (HCP). Over this period, the national economy created 231,000 jobs in urban areas and lost 17,000 jobs in rural areas, which makes a balance of 213,000 jobs created at the national level, compared to a loss of 297,000 jobs a year earlier.
By type of employment, this creation is due to the increase in the volume of paid employment of 262,000 and the reduction of unpaid employment of 49,000 positions, specifies the HCP in a document on the situation of the labor market in 3rd trimester.
In detail, the “Services” sector created 258,000 jobs, that of “Construction” 57,000 jobs, “Industry including crafts” 23,000, while “Agriculture, forestry and fishing” lost 124,000. . With an increase of 58,000, including 42,000 in urban areas and 16,000 in rural areas, the volume of unemployment reached 1,683,000 people at the national level, therefore increasing by 0.1% to 13.6%. In urban areas, the unemployment rate stagnates at 17%, but increases in rural areas, going from 7% to 7.4.
As in previous surveys, the highest rates remain recorded among young people aged 15 to 24 (39.5%), women (20.8%) and graduates (19.8%). The number of underemployed people increased by 60,000, reaching 1,066,000. The underemployment rate thus increased from 9.6% to 10% at the national level, from 8.1% to 8.8% in urban areas, while it remained stable at 12% in rural areas.
