Timothée Chalamet will have to make an effort to look like himself. Inviting himself to a lookalike competition on Sunday afternoon, the Franco-American actor did not return home with the $50 awarded to the winner in his pocket.

Many men in their twenties with curly hair gathered for this competition held in Washington Square Park in New York. According to information from Varietythe actor, notably from the film Wonka, invited himself there about 30 minutes after the start of the competition.

The actor poses with lookalikes

To pull off his surprise, Timothée “Chalamet slipped through the crowded crowd, hiding behind a black mask and a baseball cap,” says Variety. The actor went so far as to stand with two look-alikes to pose for photos. That’s when he decided to take off his mask, quickly leading to screams across the park.

But not all people recognized it. In the crowd, some continued to be interested in the look-alikes, unable to believe that the actor was actually among them. The YouTuber AnthonyPo, who claims to be behind the event, did not fall into the trap. Relaying photos from the competition, he took the opportunity to thank Timothée Chalamet for making this appearance.

The organizers also had to make do with another appearance, which this time they would have done without: that of the police. Around 1 p.m., shortly after the start of the competition, the police tried to control the already large crowd even before the arrival of the “real” Chalamet. A lookalike was even handcuffed. The reason for his arrest, however, is currently unknown. According to The Guardianorganizers were fined “$500 for an unauthorized costume contest” and the contest had to move.

In the end, the winner’s trophy went to Miles Mitchell, a student from New York. Disguised as Willy Wonka, he expressed his joy by throwing candy to the audience. Big consolation prize all the same for the “real” Chalamet: it is he who will be starring in the next biopic on Bob Dylan, which is scheduled for release at the end of the year in the United States.
