Eventful night in Gatineau: a man shot, a police officer seriously injured

The night was eventful in Gatineau. The police shot dead a man during an intervention in the Hull sector in order to “rescue a colleague”, injured with a stab, whose life was not in danger.

The police officer was seriously injured by a stab wound. He suffered several injuries. He was taken to the hospital and [il] is out of dangerindicated the Service de police de la Ville de Gatineau (SPVG) through a press release sent early Thursday morning.

The SPVG insisted on the fact that there is no no danger for the population.

The management of SPVG will provide all necessary support to the injured police officer as well as his family who are currently at his bedside in the hospital center.

As for the man shot, he died from his injuries.

As is the case when a citizen dies or suffers a serious injury during a police intervention, it is up to the Bureau of Independent Investigations (BEI) to shed light on the events.

By means of a written declaration, the AT specified that five investigators are mandated to investigate [sur] the circumstances surrounding the intervention and that the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) will make a parallel criminal investigation.

For his part, the SPVG cannot transmit any information regarding the intervention as such […] as well as the nature of the initial call. To this end, the police force only specified that it was called shortly before midnight on Wednesday.

In addition to this, the City of Gatineau Police Department mentioned having erected a command post in addition to having deployed a crisis unit with the aim of to provide the necessary psychological support to police officers and civilian employees.

Residents of the area may notice changes in their itinerary since Saint-Rédempteur Street is closed to all traffic between Sacré-Cœur Boulevard and Mangin Streetand this, for an indefinite period.
