After some internal heartbreak and a lot of confusion, the Saguenay Declaration, dear to Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois, is in the process of being adopted by the members of Québec solidaire. The co-spokesperson can use it as a political position to prepare for the next election campaign.

After hours of debate, members finally agreed to vote on the Saguenay Declaration so that it could be used by elected representatives in solidarity. Two of the three blocks were adopted on Saturday before the work was adjourned.

“We will work together,” declared André Frappier, former spokesperson for QS, after contesting the manner and form in which the document had been imposed on members.

Recall that members, including Amir Khadir, published a letter asking that this declaration not become the basis of a new QS program.

On Saturday, some of them even wanted it to be a simple “report” on the conclusions of the tour of the regions, carried out by elected officials last year.

They opposed a political use of the document, arguing contradictions with the party program.

Tension rose in the room and Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois came within an inch of losing his bet. However, at the last second, the opponents rallied, not wanting the left party to tear itself apart.

“We are not here to tear each other apart with goals like that […] We found that this was not the right way, but we are withdrawing the point of order. We are going to get out of here, we are going to do the work and we do not want to divide ourselves over matters like that,” indicated André Frappier, to the loud applause of the solidarity gathered at the Cégep de Jonquière this weekend for the National Council .

change things

Following the resignation of Émilise Lessard-Terrien, Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois (GND) wanted his party to be more “pragmatic” and become “a government party.”

In order to take power, he affirmed that the formation would have to “change things” and “make choices”. To achieve this, new positions for the party had to be taken during the National Council in May, he pointed out.

“So that we roll up our sleeves after the 2022 results and have a more convincing political offer for 2026,” he said.

These positions are found in the Saguenay Declaration, a document that develops guidelines for conquering the regions.

The declaration “aims to take root in the regions” and the “suburbs”, while preserving its achievements in the large centers, declared the interim co-spokesperson, Christine Labrie.

Thanks to this more pragmatic discourse, the training also hopes to get rid of its stereotypical moralizing image that sticks to it.

The third and final block of the declaration will be voted on Sunday morning. Members will also vote on the overhaul of the training program.

Furthermore, the choice of the new co-spokesperson for Québec solidaire, who will succeed Émilise Lessard-Terrien, will take place during the weekend of November 15 to 17, 2024. The members refused to suspend the regulations for allow for a different option which would have taken place in spring 2025.
