It continues: Quebec on the way to its first broadside of the season

Published on October 14, 2024 at 10:15 p.m.

Snow has made a comeback in Quebec. In places, there is even talk of accumulations on the roadway, particularly on Route 138 and 175. And it’s not over. Forecasts.

An eventful Thanksgiving

Thousands of Quebecers were surprised by snow on several roads in the province on Monday, notably near Charlevoix and in the Laurentides wildlife reserve. The road is covered in snow between Beaupré and Les Éboulements. Remember that many road users have not installed their winter tires and that tire grip decreases when the temperature is below 7°C. Road conditions are difficult at times.

It’s not over

The system continues its route eastwards but will continue to affect a large part of the province until Wednesday evening. Since it is accompanied by a cold air mass, the temperatures expected during Tuesday evening would favor precipitation in solid form, mainly in the regions north of the St. Lawrence River.

However, the regions south of the river would not be spared: snow could appear during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday. Residents of the Capitale-Nationale region, Beauce, Estrie, Bas-Saint-Laurent, Chaudière-Appalaches and Gaspésie could see a white carpet when they wake up, especially in mountainous terrain.

SYSTEM 2

Snow, but above all a lot of rain

What is certain is that the umbrella will be required on Tuesday and Wednesday, particularly for the regions located to the south and along the St. Lawrence River. By Wednesday evening, rain accumulations could exceed 50 mm, particularly in Bas-Saint-Laurent and the Basse-Côte-. The outlying regions will also be entitled to a cold shower: between 20 and 30 mm are forecast for Saguenay—Lac-Saint-Jean, Chaudière-Appalaches and Estrie. The further west we move, the more modest the quantities will be.

SYSTEM 4

The first broadside on the radars

The first broadside of the season could see the light of day. By Wednesday evening, snow accumulations of more than 15 cm are possible in places within the Laurentides wildlife reserve. This would be an early first broadside: it normally falls around October 20. The most significant accumulations will be at high altitude, among others near Mont Valin and in the Chic-Chocs mountains.

SYSTEM 5

The patience of Quebecers will, however, be rewarded: the sun will be out from Thursday, accompanied by a pleasant rise in temperatures.
