These two never seem to have to leave each other again. Xi Jinping welcomes Vladimir Putin to Beijing this Thursday for a two-day state visit. This will be their 43rd meeting as heads of state since 2012. For the Chinese president, this is twice as many direct talks as with his Indian counterparts, four times more than with Japan and much more than with with American presidents or European officials. The year 2024 should mark a peak with other meetings this summer in Kazan for a BRICS summit and undoubtedly in the fall in Beijing for the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Russia is resolutely turned towards the East and China is wide open to its northern neighbor.

Never since Stalin have relations been so warm. This is the direction to Moscow that Xi Jinping is taking immediately after being designated for a third five-year term at the head of the Communist Party and the Chinese state in March 2023. It is a pilgrimage to Beijing that Vladimir is making today Putin for his first outing since winning a fifth term as Russian president. The two men could reign for the next ten to fifteen years, in an increasingly absolutist manner. And if they refute any notion of alliance – a concept described as “Western” associated with a “Cold War mentality” – they display their “community of destiny” according to Chinese terminology.
