Stan Wawrinka wins his third match of the year

Published today at 9:52 p.m.

Stan Wawrinka (ATP 87) is entered this week in Bordeaux for a Challenger on clay. During the round of 16, the Vaudois won against the 27-year-old Spaniard, Bernabe Zapata Miralles (ATP 187) with a score of 7-5 6-3. This is enough to restore the balm to the heart of a Wawrinka who had accumulated misadventures in recent weeks: elimination from the outset during the Aix-en-Provence Challenger (his seventh defeat in nine matches in 2024), then a forfeit at the Masters 1000 in Rome.

On Wednesday, the Swiss had started the game badly by conceding his serve from the start. But he made the break in the second game, returning directly to the direction of travel. The two players went blow for blow until it was 6-5 for Wawrinka. This is where he made the break a second time to win the first set 7-5, on his second set point.

A round of 16 against Pedro Martinez

The opposite scenario occurred in the second set. It was Bernabe Zapata Miralles who served poorly and let the Vaudois slip to 3-0. The hardest part was done. Not quite, since Wawrinka lost his white serve in the fifth game which subsequently allowed the Spaniard to return to 3-3. But the three-time grand slam winner still had the match in hand. He proved it by raising his level of play a little notch in the home stretch. Enough to line up three games in a row and win 7-5 6-3 in 1 hour 28′.

In the round of 16, the 39-year-old Swiss will face tournament No. 2 seed Pedro Martinez on Thursday. The Spaniard is currently ranked 51st in the world.
