Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot and wounded on Wednesday after a government meeting in the town of Handlova, in central Slovakia, local press reported.

Several gunshots were heard, according to journalists present on site, cited by the Guardian. The newspaper Dennik Nwhose reporter saw the head of government taken away in a car by bodyguards, claimed that the alleged shooter had been apprehended by the police.

Slovak President Zuzana Caputova condemned the “brutal and irresponsible” attack. “I am shocked. I wish Robert Fico a lot of strength in this critical moment to recover,” said the outgoing president in a press release.

The President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen also condemned a “despicable attack”.
