(Keystone-ATS) Hamas and Palestinian groups are responsible for crimes against humanity, international investigators say. After concluding that Israel had carried out equivalent acts, they broadened this attribution to its abuses against Palestinian detainees.
In its previous report released last June, the International Commission of Inquiry on the Palestinian Territories estimated that Hamas and six Palestinian groups had carried out war crimes. Now, the three investigators believe that the forced disappearances of Israeli hostages and other inhumane acts can be considered systematic and crimes against humanity.
Israel was already accused of several crimes against humanity including extermination, gender-based persecution targeting Palestinian men and boys, murder, forced transfers, torture and other abuses. In its report released Thursday, the commission also estimates that thousands of Palestinian detainees were victims of the crime against humanity of torture.
