Giro 2024 – Tadej Pogacar (UAE Emirates): “The Tour de France is in the back of my mind”

It was a rather relaxed Tadej Pogacar who presented himself to the press this Monday, on the occasion of the first rest day of the Tour of Italy 2024. It must be said that the Slovenian phenomenon has good reasons to be serene: he has won three of the nine stages run since the Grand Départ and occupies first place in the general classification, with 2’40” ahead of Daniel Felipe Martinez (BORA-Hansgrohe), his closest pursuer. “If someone had told me that, I would have signed straight away”assured the wearer of the pink jersey, delighted with his first transalpine week “almost perfect.”

Thanks to the gap he has opened up on his pursuers, “Pogi” can see it coming. He can also already look forward to his other major objective of the year, namely the Tour de France. “Of course the Tour is in the back of my mind, he assumed. That’s why I’m happy to have a bigger lead. I won’t need to push too far beyond the limits to take time from my rivals. Now I’m going to have a more defensive approach and lean on my team as much as possible until the finish line.”

Pogi is wary of INEOS

Launched in the quest for the very difficult Giro-Tour double in the same year, Pogacar will therefore be able to try to manage himself with a view to the Grande Boucle, he who was dominated there by Jonas Vingegaard during the last two editions. But that doesn’t mean he considers he has already won the race in Italy, far from it. “We must be ready, especially during the third week, to suffer big attacks from our opponents, in particular INEOS, with Thymen Arensman and Geraint Thomas. They will have good cards to play”he warned.

Pogacar flies over the clock: his arrival in Perugia

“Generally speaking, anything can happen during mountain stages, recalled the one who also won Liège-Bastogne-Liège a few weeks ago. I just have to be ready, have the right mindset and push until the end, even if I’m having a bad day.” And to add: “It’s really nice to have this little mattress.” We understand why, in fact.
