The city of Marrakech lived for four days to the rhythm of a major event grandly celebrating the Moroccan caftan. Indeed, from May 9 to 12, 2024, the ocher city hosted the 2024 edition of the Caftan du Maroc, now called ”Caftan Week”. This cultural event, which has not taken place since the Covid-19 pandemic, for four years now, has been completely transformed thanks to new concepts freshly put in place by the organizers. ”This 24th edition organized under the theme “Morocco Land of the Caftan” has been completely transformed. Instead of an isolated parade held in a single day, we migrated to a new concept,” underlined Ichrak Moubsit, organizer of Caftan Week and publishing director of the magazine Femmes du Maroc.

It is at the Museum of the History of the Caftan in Dar El Bacha, whose walls are elegantly decorated with Moroccan zellige, that the organizers inaugurated this annual meeting. The exhibiting artisans, including women – tailors, dressmakers and embroiderers – offered the public the opportunity to discover the multiple facets and styles of the Moroccan caftan, which is an integral part of Morocco’s intangible cultural heritage. Equipped with their ornamental accessories, trimmings, cables, silk fabrics, cat’s needles…, the artisans perfectly embodied the role of ambassadors of this purely Moroccan outfit during the inauguration. Then, they passed the torch to other Moroccan brands to present their most recent collections.

On the sidelines of Caftan Week 2024, eight young emerging talents were highlighted as part of the “young talents parade”. On this occasion, these young fashion designers presented, Friday May 10, 2024 in the afternoon, pieces which not only “bring new life” to this traditional Moroccan outfit, but also tell “captivating” stories. through their creations. The flagship event this year being the grand parade which was celebrated on Saturday May 11 of the current year at the prestigious Golf Al Maaden. Exhibiting breathtaking caftans, combining tradition and modernity and appropriately devoting the theme of the year, sixteen designers stood out for their ”innovative approach”, said the organizers. This year’s Caftan Week is part of an approach to promoting the caftan, seeking to both celebrate and perpetuate this tradition in a modernized context,” they also wanted to emphasize.
