The 6 Hours of Spa were interrupted shortly after four hours of running following a huge accident on the Kemmel straight, halfway between Raidillon and Les Combes. While putting pressure on Neel Jani’s Porsche for third place, Earl Bamber moved to the right to attempt a maneuver.

In doing so, he then hit the front of Sean Gelael’s BMW LMGT3, which had moved to the right of the track in order to be overtaken. The contact immediately sent the V-Series.R into the guardrail on the right before launching it into the air. The car, largely destroyed, almost overturned and then finally fell “on its wheels” right on the track, while Gelael suffered a strong impact with the barriers on the left. Both pilots are apparently unharmed.

Ferrari leads the race with its two official 499Ps at the time of the interruption. Repair work took place on the damaged barriers for more than an hour and a half. Around 6:50 p.m., the race management announced that the race would be extended by the time of the interruption, which should take it beyond 8:30 p.m.

This is not the first big accident of this event since the Safety Car was brought out when the BMW LMDh of René Rast sent the Jota Porsche LMDh of Phil Hanson into a spin before Brussels, the latter then ending up on the path of a BMW LMGT3 driven by Ahmad Al Harthy, before ending his race in the barriers. The race was neutralized for almost an hour to repair the safety rails.
