This is a major first that risks changing the daily lives of many Colruyt group customers. Indeed, last year, the supermarket chain introduced a change for customers at checkout with the appearance of smart cameras at checkout.

These cameras were to allow chain employees to be able to scan each customer’s items with both hands. A small revolution since, until now, they used only one hand to take the products and pass them from one shopping cart to another, while they used a scanner with the other hand.

But this Monday, the chain is introducing a new change at the checkouts…

Indeed, the “Okay” store in Hoegaarde (Flemish Brabant) this Monday became the first store in the Colruyt group to house an automatic checkout. “Customers will be able to scan and pay themselves,” explains group spokesperson Eva Billereyst to Nieuwsblad.

In Wallonia, the new product will be available at the Spar in Mouscron as well as the Okay stores in Fleurus and Rebecq.

“Out of trust for our customers”

While in many supermarkets, a security gate is installed at the exit of the automatic checkouts, the Colruyt group has taken the opposite approach. “Out of confidence for our customers, we do not install gantries at checkouts. »

“There will always be a host available to help you,” specifies the spokesperson. “This year, we are deploying the system in 10 Okay, Okay Compact and Spar Colruyt Group stores. Early next year we will look at how we can deploy it further. »

Could we see these self-checkouts appearing in Colruyt supermarkets? For the moment, such a project would not be on the agenda, according to the Flemish media.
