Online harassment: Twint becomes the weapon of her obsessive ex-boyfriend

A 21-year-old young woman from the canton of Saint-Gall is faced with an unprecedented situation of harassment. Her ex-boyfriend sends her unwanted messages via the payment application Twint, taking advantage of a flaw in the system.

Twint does not offer the possibility of blocking unwanted numbers.

As “20 Minuten” reports, the woman broke up with her boyfriend two months ago. Despite her repeated requests to leave her alone, the man continues to bombard her with messages on different platforms. After being blocked on WhatsApp and Instagram, he found a roundabout way to contact her: via Twint.

The stalker sends her tiny payments of just a few cents, exploiting the functionality to add a message to the payment wording. This is how he sends her romantic messages, as screenshots of their conversations show.

Users can contact their bank

Twint does not offer the ability to block unwanted numbers, making it difficult for victims to protect themselves from harassment. The person affected feels helpless and anxious, as she tells “20 Minuten”.

Faced with this type of abuse, Twint hides behind the responsibility of the issuing banks. These would have the possibility of blocking the account of the sender of unwanted messages. The company strongly condemns the misuse of messaging for the purposes of harassment, denouncing a “clear diversion of the objective of the application”. The Swiss payment app adds that such incidents are “very rare”.
