One of the most memorable looks at the 2024 Met Gala is also one of the most short-lived: as many attendees at Monday night’s ultra-exclusive event clung to the floral aspect of the evening’s dress code “Garden of Time”, Tyla relied on the concept of time for her first Met Gala look.

The singer wore a Balmain dress created by the brand’s artistic director, Olivier Rousteing, sculpted from a cast of her body, then created from three different colors of sand and microcrystal studs to add sparkle to the South African singer’s every move. The strapless dress flows down to an organza mermaid train.

Olivier Rousteing explained to Vogue the origin of the dress before the red carpet: “The inspiration behind this creation comes from a desire to redefine boundaries and transform an ephemeral material into an eternal masterpiece. The idea of sculpting a garment from something as ephemeral as sand ignited my imagination and I couldn’t be happier with the end result. »
