In exile, a dissident historian appeals to the conscience of Russian society

Surprised during a vacation in Greece by the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, dissident Russian historian Tamara Eidelman has resolved not to be able to return to her country as long as Vladimir Putin’s regime lasts. With only one suitcase as her luggage, Tamara Eidelman, 65, who taught History for more than 30 years in a prestigious establishment in Moscow before becoming an editor and blogger, joined her daughter in Portugal for an unlimited exile.

“I’m assuming I won’t come back. I am building a life in Portugal,” she explained during a recent interview with AFP during a conference near Washington. “I would like to go back, but if I spend my days wondering when, I will go crazy,” confides Tamara Eidelman, who has more than 1.6 million subscribers – including more than a million gained since invasion — to his YouTube channel broadcasting lectures on the history of Russia, Ukraine and the world.
