On August 2, 2023, June Mills, 96, leaves her bridge club at Formby Methodist Church, north Liverpool. She gets behind the wheel of her car while two of her friends, Brenda Joyce, 76, and Jennifer Ensor, 80, walk to their vehicles.

But suddenly, June Mills, who has been driving for 65 years, steps on the accelerator and knocks down the two women. Brenda Joyce’s head hit the windshield and she then remained trapped under the car until firefighters freed her. But she died from her injuries. Jennifer Ensor was only slightly injured.

June Mills has just appeared in court in Liverpool. She pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, although she says she does not know how she could have accelerated like that. The judge sentenced her to 18 months in prison, suspended for 18 months, and banned from driving for five years, reports the BBC.

Putting her in prison would not do anyone any favors, said the judge, who evoked a tragedy. The victim’s widower did not sue June Mills, who said she was sorry for what happened. “The consequences will haunt her forever. She feels great shame and a deep sense of guilt,” her lawyer argued.

As for Jennifer Ensor, she now gets nervous when walking on a sidewalk or driving and feels guilty for surviving. She said she has not been able to complete a round of golf since the accident.

June Mille was also ordered to pay a fine of £1,500 (1,700 francs) and £500 (565 francs) in court costs.
