ISTANBUL – Azerbaijan announced on Sunday that its military positions in the autonomous exclave of Nakhichevan had come under fire from Armenia. The Azeri Defense Ministry said the Armenian army allegedly fired on its positions near Yukhari Buzgov, about 2 kilometers from the border.

The incident occurred on Saturday evening at 11:20 p.m. local time (19:20 GMT), the ministry said. “Adequate response measures were taken by our units in the mentioned direction,” the statement added.

Armenian authorities have yet to comment on the incident, although Yerevan has in the past rejected such accusations. The incident is the sixth such incident reported by Baku this month, the previous one taking place last Thursday.

Relations between Baku and Yerevan have been strained since the Armenian army occupied Karabakh in 1991, a territory internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, and seven adjacent regions. Most of this territory was liberated by Azerbaijan during a 44-day war in fall 2020, which ended with a peace deal mediated by Russia. This agreement paved the way for the normalization and demarcation of their common border.

In September 2023, Azerbaijan established full sovereignty over Karabakh after an “anti-terrorist operation” that resulted in the surrender of separatist forces in the region.
