(Keystone-ATS) The Israeli army announced on Sunday that it was carrying out “dozens” of new raids against Hezbollah in Lebanon. It targets military buildings, two days after killing the leader of the pro-Iranian movement Hassan Nasrallah by bombing the southern suburbs of Beirut.

Israeli aircraft “have attacked dozens of terrorist targets on the territory of Lebanon over the past few hours,” an army spokesperson said on Telegram. He said these attacks targeted rocket launch sites towards Israel, military buildings and weapons depots.

Since Saturday, the Israeli army “has struck hundreds of Hezbollah terrorist targets across Lebanon,” the spokesperson said.

Hezbollah, a powerful Shiite group allied with Palestinian Hamas at war against Israel in the Gaza Strip, confirmed on Saturday the death of its charismatic leader Hassan Nasrallah, killed the day before in an Israeli bombardment of incredible power against the southern suburbs of Beirut , bastion of the movement.

Hezbollah opened a front against Israel at the start of the Gaza war, sparked by an October 7, 2023 attack on Israel led by Hamas. After a year of sporadic exchanges of fire across the border, Israel launched a major bombing campaign against the Shiite movement in Lebanon almost a week ago.

Israel claims to be acting to stop Hezbollah’s fire towards the north of its territory, bordering southern Lebanon, and thus allow the return of tens of thousands of residents forced to flee.
