Mission half accomplished for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visiting his first ally in the face of the Russian invasion. On the paper of the press release released Thursday by the White House, “the United States will provide Ukraine with the support it needs to win the war.” Concretely, it is much less clear. Joe Biden promised that all funds for Ukraine already approved by Congress would be spent by the end of his term on January 20. To do this, the American president announced the delivery of hundreds of Patriot missiles, in order to intercept Russian missiles and protect Ukrainian cities. Next year, the United States will also train sixteen Ukrainian pilots on American-made F16 fighters already delivered by several European countries.

Finally, Ukraine will receive missiles that can strike targets at a distance of around a hundred kilometers, although the range is less than other weapons already in the possession of the Ukrainian army. The value of these deliveries amounts to 5.5 billion dollars. An additional 2.4 billion was put on the table to strengthen Ukraine’s anti-aircraft defenses and develop the Ukrainian military industry. On the other hand, Joe Biden did not say a word about an authorization to use these missiles against Russian territory, which Ukraine insists on to curb Russian assaults. In this eventuality, Vladimir Putin threatens the West, believing that they would thus go to war against Russia. He brandishes, once again, the nuclear threat.
