Linda Yaccarino, boss of X, reacted to the resignation of Thierry Breton on X.

INTERNATIONAL – The boss of X a little mocking? A few hours after the announcement of the resignation of European Commissioner Thierry Breton, on bad terms with the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, Linda Yaccarino reacted in a message posted on the social network.

“It’s a great day for freedom of expression”she wrote, sharing Thierry Breton’s resignation letter, which he published in its entirety on X, thus displaying his disagreements with the German woman re-elected to head the Commission last July.

The post by the CEO of X may raise a smile, because the relations between the leaders of X, now controlled by the controversial entrepreneur and billionaire Elon Musk, and Thierry Breton are notoriously complicated. When he was the Digital Commissioner responsible for regulating the web giants in Europe, the Frenchman had opened an investigation into alleged failures of the social network in terms of protecting minors.

Elon Musk and Thierry Breton at odds

The tone had risen a notch last August. In a letter addressed to the founder of Tesla that he had distributed on the same social network, the former French Minister of the Economy invited the businessman to respect the new European legislation concerning obligations in terms of transparency and moderation of online content.

The response from the boss of X was not long in coming. He had quoted Thierry Breton’s letter with a meme that was both ironic and insulting, referring to a line from the American film Thunder in the tropics, as you can see below. Their exchange had raised fears of the end of X in Europe.

In 2023, Thierry Breton had also posted a message that left little to the imagination, calling for people to leave Twitter (now X) for its newly launched competitor Blue Sky. The latter has not yet supplanted the social network with the blue bird. So, rather comically, it was on X that Thierry Breton had to announce his resignation.
